3 Things To Think About When Excavating For A Pool

by J Newton Excavations, August 30, 2021

Your first pool is a rite of passage for many Australian families, and it's all part of owning your first house in the suburbs. So, how do you get started designing your amazing new swimming pool from the ground up?

It seems obvious: earth comes out, water goes in, and you've got yourself a pool. But as with everything in home improvement, it's never that simple. So, what do you have to think about when excavating your new pool? Keep reading or give us a call to discuss your situation.

Can I Even Have A Pool?

Getting a house with a backyard big enough for a pool seems like the most important step, but there's no guarantee that you'll be able to dig one just because you have the space.

Many houses in Australia, especially in the suburbs, are crisscrossed underground by utilities and pipes that belong to the local authority or utility companies. It's possible to re-locate these services, but it can add a lot to the cost of your build, so make sure you check beforehand with a surveyor.

The neighbours won't be best pleased if you cut through their electricity and knock out their air con!

Permissions For Pool Building

If you've established you can build a pool, and you've settled on a type and design, you'll need to make sure you have permission from your local council.

Planning permission isn't required for a pool in most situations, but you will need permission to carry out any waste and fresh waterworks. This is followed by a certification that it all meets the standards laid out in the building codes.

This can usually be done by your builder, but it's always best to check that it's all in order before any works begin.

Choose The Right Contractor

It might seem like constructing the pool is the easy part after all that paperwork, but that's not always the case.

You want a pool, not just a hole in the ground, so you will want to hire a reputable, well-regarded contractor with the skills and experience needed to do the job right. Your contractor will also need to be able to guarantee safety and efficiency throughout the installation of your pool, and they need to have an ethical strategy for disposing of the rubble and waste afterwards.

It's also a good idea to hire a contractor that will agree to leave your yard as they found it, not covered in dirt and mess for you to clean up!
